Remember life.<\/h2>\n

What do we need to mourn?<\/p>\n

To heal after losing our loved ones or life witnesses?
\nTo remember a human life?<\/p>\n

In the past years I\u2019ve been contemplating these questions.
\nAsking people.
\nStudying graveyards.
\nDiscovered needs.
\nFor touching. Seeing. Using body and senses to get in contact with the one missing.
\nContact with the inner loss.<\/p>\n

I realized something important:<\/p>\n

Death is not an abstraction.
\nIt is an overwhelming change of life, surrounded by very concrete experiences.
\nThe concrete needs everyone has by a grave:<\/p>\n

To lighten a candle. In the rain.
\nTo lighten up the name of the lost one.
\nTo be able to sit by the grave, without getting your knees aching and wet.<\/p>\n

These things I discovered, and the need to personalize the grave in some way.
\nTo make it visible to oneself \u2013 and to others \u2013 that here is not just a resting place for someone that is now dead.
\nHere is a whole life. A life with others. A life that is still having an imprint in the world.
\nThe strange thing about death
\nis that although everything has changed,
\nall things<\/em> are still there.
\nThe belongings used by the lost one.
\nEveryday objects that carry memories.<\/p>\n

I make grave markers with bronze casts of objects
\nthat have a personal connection to the one that has passed away.
\nMy experience is that these bronze cast objects can make a grave marker more personal
\nand add a sense of connection and remembrance of the one it belonged to.<\/p>\n

To capture everyday objects in bronze
\ndo not only create a copy.
\nThe metal adds a dimension to the experience.<\/p>\n

Compared to the original,
\nthe blurry edge can represent the process of remembering.
\nBecause a memory is not a sharp copy,
\nit is formed.
\nIn the bronze castings, the details can be visible,
\nbut there may also be small pieces missing.
\nLike in memory.<\/p>\n

My first grave marker, Reflection of life<\/em>, is built in steel segments which contains a lantern and a ring with text that get light from within. On top of these is a square block of terrazzo with a round water mirror which gets illuminated from the lantern below through a transparent rod. In its centre a bronze object of remembrance is placed.<\/p>\n

My second grave marker, Sit by me<\/em>, invites for a seated contemplation next to an object which carry memories.<\/p>\n

Objects with connection to lost and loved ones could also be placed on or next to existing grave markers. This is illustrated with the three last examples.<\/p>\n
