The investigation of materiality as absence
In The investigation of Materiality as Absence, I have woven new versions, from photographs of patterned and worn textiles. I wanted to see how holes and abrasions can be interpreted in different materials, colors and structures. Through the survey, new questions have arisen about the difference between images and objects and the distance I experience between the sketch on the screen and what I see in front of me in the loom.
The first 19 weaves form a chain of thought, or a pilot study. My experiences are summarized through weaves 20 and 21.
In the jacquard-woven technique I use, all picks are shuttled all the way, from selvedge edge to selvedge, from side to side. Under the visual holes and worn parts, all threads are undamaged.
I appreciate textile’s ability to change rooms and I like when things break.
All weaves have the approximate width of 150 cm and are of varying length between 100-240 cm. The warp has been cotton, weft mainly linen, wool, silk and Tencel.
